Known for
Mont Blanc, the Vallée Blanche, the 1924 Winter Olympics

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a real mountain town rather than a purpose-built resort. It sits in the Haute-Savoie department of France, directly below Mont Blanc, and it hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924.

The skiing is spread along the valley in separate areas rather than one linked domain: Les Grands Montets, Brévent-Flégère and the Balme area, from Le Tour down to Les Houches. A cable car climbs to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m, the starting point of the Vallée Blanche off-piste descent.

Good to know for your transfer

  1. The Mont Blanc Tunnel, 11.6 km long, links Chamonix with Courmayeur in Italy, which is why Turin is a practical airport for Chamonix as well as Geneva and Lyon.
  2. Because the ski areas are spread along the valley, give the exact address of your accommodation: Les Houches, Chamonix centre, Argentière and Le Tour are different stops on the same road.
